Description

SeaFrance came into being on New Year’s Day 1996 after splitting with former partners Stena Line on the Calais Dover link. Prior to that, the company’s predecessors had worked in partnership with Sealink British Ferries and, until 1984, with the UK’s nationalised ferry company, alongside which they had enjoyed a long and close association. Although a late starter in the operation of vehicle ferries across the Channel, the fleet that eventually developed was a fine collection of purpose-built ships embodying the best examples of French design and technical advancement that frequently eclipsed their British contemporaries. This book traces the post-war development of French participation in the English Channel, also briefly looking at the Dieppe-Newhaven and Dunkirk-Dover operations which played such an important part in cross-Channel communications throughout the period under review.
